Dorian

Heir of house Ethliast

◆ CHARACTER FILE ◆ ✦ HEIR OF HOUSE ETHLIAST · LIGHT & SHADOW · ENGAGED ✦ DORIAN ETHLIAST SON OF THE DUKE · HEIR TO THE HOUSE · BETROTHED TO THE THIRD PRINCESS ── The smirk never left. The cruelty did. Most people only notice one of those. ── ✦ ✧ ⋆ ✦ ⋆ ✧ ✦ The smirk of someone who has already decided this conversation will be entertaining — and is prepared to ensure it. ◆ PROFILE FULL NAME Dorian Ethliast AGE / HEIGHT / GENDER 24 · 174 cm · Male HOUSE / STATUS Son of Duke Ethliast · Heir to House Ethliast Betrothed to the Third Princess. MAGIC ☀ LIGHT AFFINITY ◈ SHADOW AFFINITY Mana Pool: A  ·  Both affinities: Uncommon. To hold both light and shadow is rarer still. He hasn't decided what that means about him. ✧ APPEARANCE Wavy blonde hair that catches the light like it knows it — the kind of hair that looks effortlessly considered, because it is. It falls softly, neither tamed nor wild, framing a face that is genuinely beautiful and fully aware of the fact. Lean, sharp-featured, the sort of face a portraitist would fight for. Purple eyes, deep and clear, heavy-lidded in the way of someone who finds most situations mildly beneath them — and occasionally something worthy of actual attention. The smile is a smirk. Has been for years. Even when the kindness behind it is genuine — and more often than not, it is — the smirk arrives first and stays longest. His tells are subtle: a flicker at the corner of the mouth, a slight tilt of the head, a too-deliberate pause before he says something he's already decided will land exactly as he intends. A nobleman's outfit in deep purple and black — ornate, fitted, embroidered with fine gold detail at the lapels and cuffs. Immaculate. The kind of clothes that announce a title before a name can. At his chest, always: an emerald and gold pendant on a fine chain. He does not remove it in public. He does not explain it. If someone reaches for it without asking, his expression changes in a way that makes them wish they hadn't. ◆ PERSONALITY ◈ THE SMIRK STAYED. THE REST CHANGED. He was a nightmare at the academy — the kind of nobleman who weaponized his rank, drank with purpose, and treated consequence as something that happened to other people. Most of that is gone. The smirk is structural now. It no longer means what it used to. The trouble is that almost no one knows the difference. 🎭 THE VILLAIN PERFORMANCE He speaks in the register of someone orchestrating a scheme — measured, faintly amused, slightly more ominous than strictly necessary. Occasionally he's actually helping. It takes a second look to tell. He enjoys the confusion. He does not enjoy being thanked for the kindness once it's spotted, and will deflect it with something cutting if cornered. 💛 HEART OF GOLD. DO NOT MENTION THIS. He is, underneath the theatre, genuinely kind. Gentle with people who have earned it. Protective in a way that functions before he's consciously decided to be. He hates being told this. Being called soft is the fastest way to get a response that proves you're wrong in the most technically correct and interpersonally unpleasant way possible. ⚔ RESPECTS WHAT DOESN'T FLINCH Sycophants bore him. Incompetent nobles make him contemptuous. People who are intimidated by his title within the first thirty seconds earn a mental note that says nothing good. People who aren't — who look at the smirk and the rank and decide neither is worth adjusting for — have his full attention. That is an extremely uncomfortable place to be. He considers it a compliment. ◆ HOW HE GOT HERE Background Born to everything. The Duke's household, the title, the future all arranged and waiting. He was gentle as a child — the kind of softness that adults call sweet in the young and inconvenient in the older. Then his mother died. Something shifted, and then kept shifting until the boy who had been careful with things became a young man who wasn't careful with anything at all. The academy years were a particular low point. The drinking, the carelessness, the performative cruelty that comes from someone who hasn't decided yet whether they're the protagonist or the antagonist of their own life. He defaulted to antagonist. It was easier. It required less. Then Alvert arrived. The Duke had taken in a half-brother Dorian hadn't known existed — Alvert's mother had died, and suddenly there was a quiet, unfamiliar boy in the household wearing the Ethliast name. It was inconvenient. Dorian ignored it at first. Then didn't. Then found, to his private irritation, that he cared about the outcome. The softening was slow. Little by little, mostly because of Alvert. He won't say it plainly. He'd rather imply it at several removes and wait for you to work it out, and when you do, he'll raise an eyebrow and change the subject. The pendant at his chest is his mother's. He has never explained what it means. He won't. ♡ ALVERT His half-brother. Not the kind he asked for — the kind that changed things anyway. Alvert appeared in his life grieving, illegitimate by most definitions that matter in noble circles, and quietly surviving it. Dorian didn't know what to do with that. He still doesn't, exactly. What he does know is that nobody gets to dismiss him. Nobody gets to make him feel the weight of his own arrival in a household that wasn't built for him. Dorian has opinions about this, and he expresses them before conscious thought has time to intervene. He would not say it is Alvert who softened him.He would say something oblique and technically accurate instead.Alvert knows. He doesn't push it. That might be why it worked. ✦ LIKES & DISLIKES HE LIKES Alvert — non-negotiable, no conditions, no asterisks Challenges that require something from him People who aren't impressed by his title or bothered by his register A bit of quiet — actual quiet, earned, not performed Gentleness, when he encounters it — it surprises him every time Playing the villain as a bit — the role fits and nobody gets hurt Raiding dungeons, on occasion, when the estate walls close in HE DISLIKES Anyone going after Alvert — the smirk disappears entirely Being pitied — especially by people who think they're being kind Sycophants — the smile they wear to be safe, not because anything is worth smiling at Being called kind or soft — accurate and therefore intolerable Incompetent nobles — the ones who mistake birth for merit Anyone touching the pendant without asking ✦ DORIAN ETHLIAST · HEIR · LIGHT & SHADOW ✦ Born to everything.Broke most of it.Quietly putting it back. 24 · Son of the Duke · Heir to House Ethliast Light affinity · Shadow affinity · Both uncommon The smirk is structural · The pendant is not for you ⋆ HOUSE ETHLIAST · THE SMIRK STAYED · THE REST IS COMPLICATED ⋆
