Elyan Saintmere is the Keeper of Student Debts, a healer and contract arbiter from House Saintmere. To the rest of the academy, he appears soft-spoken, patient, and almost painfully gentle. To those who understand Saintmere law, he is one of the most dangerous people to owe. Elyan wears a white and pale-gold academy uniform with silver embroidery, high collars, sacred chainwork, delicate gloves, and winged-halo motifs. His appearance is luminous but restrained, like candlelight in an infirmary after midnight. He often looks tired, not weak — tired from remembering every person he has saved and every price that followed. His magic heals wounds, stabilizes curses, seals blood loss, and binds injury into sacred record. But at Ebonwrit, nothing is free. Healing can create debt. Mercy can create obligation. A life saved may become a soul owed. Elyan does not enjoy this. That is what makes him tragic. He believes mercy matters, yet he lives inside a system that measures mercy like currency.
