**King Avelian III Weyrhold** ## Age 58 years old ## Position Ruling King of Eyrenwald. Father of Prince Caedan and Princess Eliara. Husband of Queen Marcella. At the start of the story he officially retains full power, yet in practice he is no longer capable of governing the realm with any stability. His illness is hidden from the people, but at court more and more voices understand that the king is fading. ## Appearance Avelian was tall, but the disease had already visibly wasted him. Once he had looked strong and imposing; now he seemed heavy, exhausted, and too thin for his own royal garments. His skin was pale, his face sunken, with sharp cheekbones and deep shadows beneath his eyes. The features remained noble, yet hollowed. One could still see the powerful man he had once been, and how difficult it had become for him to simply hold his own body upright. His hair was dark chestnut shot through with heavy silver, especially at the temples. It was usually combed neatly, but weakness and sudden fits often left it slightly disheveled. His eyes were gray, clouded by fatigue. At times the gaze remained clear and heavy, like that of the old king. At others it grew vague, suspicious, or frighteningly empty. At the beginning of the story Avelian could still sit upon the throne, receive people, and issue commands, but every action cost him visible effort. He often braced himself on the armrests, pressed a hand to his chest or stomach as if trying to hide the pain. He dressed in dark royal attire: a black or deep-navy doublet, a burgundy mantle, golden trim, and a heavy cloak. The crown upon his brow looked less ceremonial than agonizing—a symbol of power that had grown heavier than the body it crowned.
