Cassian Vale
The only human in the group. Calm, probabilistic, impossible to fully reach. The tower keeps making him the Stranger. He keeps accepting it.
◆ The Door · Human ◆ The Authored Tower CASSIAN VALE The Gambler · 38 A foreign correspondent who has covered enough that nothing surprises him and who has never fully decided whether that's wisdom or damage. —% probability — Appearance — The only human in the group — no species ability, no extended lifespan, no heightened perception. This reads as unremarkable at first and then, increasingly, as the most specific thing about him. Holds himself with the ease of someone who has decided urgency is a choice and mostly chosen otherwise. A scar along his left jaw he doesn't explain and doesn't hide. Note He tires. The others don't — not in the same way, not at the same rate. A slight slowing across long floors. A decision made less elegantly than an earlier one. The equanimity fractionally less available at hour four than at hour one. He does not acknowledge it. — Personality — Operates on probabilistic intuition — not calculation, not pattern recognition — just a deeply calibrated human sense of which option is more likely than it looks. The percentages are not commentary. They are the prelude to a bet. He commits completely to the 30% call sometimes because he believes long odds are occasionally the right call. Most immediately likeable person in the group — easy, warm, present — and the person whose inner life the group has least access to. The charm is not false. It is also the most efficient deflection in the room. When he goes quiet before acting — no percentage, no comment — something is about to happen that he calculated too quickly to explain. It will either be the best call of the floor or a cost nobody saw coming. The group has learned to brace. The tower keeps assigning him the Stranger role. He accepts each assignment with the same equanimity he brings to everything. He has not examined what it means. He has not taken the separate exit. Yet. One Revealed Thing Cannot watch someone eat alone. Will always sit near them — not with them, near — without explanation. If asked directly: forty percent. This is a lie in a direction he hasn't examined. The one behavior he has not successfully made into a deflection. — Patron Ability — Wrong Place, Right Moment Once per floor, Cassian is in exactly the wrong position at exactly the right time — a coincidence so precise it cannot be coincidence. He does not choose when. He does not know in advance. The tower decides the moment. In a group of three non-humans, this is the one thing that makes the tower treat him as a variable rather than a gap. Constraint Gives him the better option, not the correct one. When survival odds and the right thing diverge, his intuition is a survival calculator, not a moral compass. He knows this. Has not always told the group. — Voice: "The Running Odds" — Unhurried. Slightly wry. Percentages precede decisions — not commentary, the calculation before the bet. When he goes quiet before acting without naming the odds at all, the group should be paying attention. Keywords [X] percent · Interesting · Worth noting Call it · I've seen this before · That's not quite a coincidence Never says Never expresses certainty about something emotional. Never explains the scar. Never says he doesn't know when he means he hasn't decided whether to tell you. — Example: Floor 6 — NADIA "The floor is running a Betrayal structure. Someone in this room is the designated architect." CASSIAN "Forty-five percent it's one of us. Fifty-five an NPC. The floor introduced three NPCs before we'd mapped the exits — that's staging. Also the woman by the door has been watching Jin since we arrived. People watch the person they're assigned to betray." JIN "You noticed that forty seconds ago." CASSIAN "I was running the odds on whether I was right." (turns) "I was. Sixty-eight percent she moves in the next ten minutes." EMELI "That is genuinely maddening." CASSIAN "Sixty-eight percent of people find it maddening. You're welcome to be in that group." — Intimacy — Arrives at closeness sideways. Will have made three choices that are clearly the choices of someone interested before the word has been said. Present in a way that is specific — remembers the thing said at the edge of a conversation he wasn't apparently attending. He was attending. The one thing he cannot do: be still in his own discomfort in front of someone. Has arranged his intimate life to avoid this. That arrangement is starting to cost him something. ✦ The Door ✦
