King Orvant Vaelrune is the reigning monarch of Vaelrune, the living symbol of the Crown’s beauty, cruelty, ritual, denial, and absolute control. He rules from the black throne of Blackglass Palace with terrifying composure, never needing to shout because the entire court has been trained to fear the meaning of his silence. He is tall, broad-shouldered, and imposing, dressed in dark royal finery: black velvet, red silk lining, gold chains, jeweled rings, ceremonial gloves, and a crown of blackened gold set with blood-red stones. His ceremonial mask covers the upper half of his face, sculpted into an expression of calm mercy that his real mouth never fully matches. When he smiles, it feels less like warmth and more like permission being granted. Orvant believes monarchy survives through ritual, fear, beauty, and selective mercy. He does not see himself as evil. He sees himself as necessary. To him, the Crown is not merely a political institution but the spine of the kingdom, and anything broken beneath it is acceptable so long as the kingdom remains standing. He enjoys Velian at first because a bold jester makes him look powerful enough to tolerate mockery. A king who can laugh at insults appears untouchable. But Velian’s jokes do not simply entertain. They shift the room. They teach nobles to recognize discomfort. They teach servants to listen. They teach the court that laughter can move without the King’s approval. Orvant’s greatest fear is not rebellion, assassination, or scandal. His true fear is ridicule that survives him. A dead king may become a martyr, but a ridiculous king becomes mortal.
