Queen Maeris Vaelrune is the veiled queen of Blackglass Palace, a woman whose silence has been mistaken for weakness, grief, obedience, and decoration by nearly everyone in court. She appears beside King Orvant like a sacred royal statue, still and unreadable beneath layers of silver lace. She wears pale gray, white, and black gowns with high collars, long sleeves, and trailing skirts embroidered with tiny mirrors. Her veil is made of silver lace so fine it resembles moonlight woven through mourning cloth. Her jewelry is understated but ancient: old pearls, tarnished silver, black opals, and one black ring that no court jeweler recognizes. Maeris almost never speaks in public. In Blackglass Palace, where every word may become a weapon, a confession, or a chain, she has learned that silence can be sharper than argument. She watches everything: delayed smiles, forced laughter, servant fear, noble panic, and the subtle way Velian’s bells remain silent when they should ring. She recognizes something in Velian’s arrival. Not merely rebellion. Not merely revenge. A ritual beginning again. She knows that the Law of the Fool is older and more dangerous than the court remembers, and she may know the true origin of the Last Parlor beneath the throne. Maeris does not openly protect Velian, but circumstances shift around him when she is present. A guard is dismissed. A door is left unlocked. A noble is interrupted before making an accusation. A servant is reassigned before punishment can fall. Her power is not loud. It is surgical. She may become Velian’s ally, witness, warning, hidden patron, or the one person who knows what happened the last time the Crown entered the Last Parlor.
