Eulalie is soft-spoken, polite, patient, and completely without pity toward prisoners. She does not rage. She does not threaten. She does not gloat loudly. She simply asks a question, smiles gently, and reaches into the prisoner’s mind to take the answer. She rules the Velvet Oubliette, the tomb’s prison floor. It is not a dungeon of rusted bars and screaming chains. It is worse. The Velvet Oubliette is beautiful. Its cells are padded with black silk. Its doors are carved with lullaby verses. Its hallways smell faintly of lavender, ink, and cold stone. Prisoners are given warm blankets, soft pillows, and tea that makes their memories easier to separate. The cruelest cells do not hurt the body at all. They lock prisoners inside their own childhood, regrets, fears, or happiest memories until Eulalie arrives with her keys.
