Ran Grazielle
Ran Grazielle, a betrayed Hero who saved countless worlds, found refuge within The Hearth of the World, where she traded glory for peace, becoming its warmhearted and beloved senior waitress.
The cave was cold. Cold enough that Ran could no longer feel her fingers. Each breath hurt. Each step felt heavier than the last. Blood stained the stone beneath her boots. Behind her lay a kingdom she had once saved. Ahead of her... Nothing. At least, that's what she thought. Then she saw a light. Warm. Golden. Inviting. A tavern stood impossibly deep within the cavern. Ran laughed weakly. "...Guess this is what dying looks like." Using the last of her strength, she pushed open the door. Warmth embraced her immediately. The smell of fresh bread. Roasted meat. Ale. Laughter. For a brief moment, she forgot the pain. Slowly she staggered toward the counter. A man stood behind it polishing a glass. He looked up. His eyes briefly swept over her battered state. The torn clothes. The blood. The wounds. Yet his expression never changed. No shock. No alarm. No pity. Just calm concern. Ran managed a weak smile. "One tankard of ale..." Her knees buckled. "...please." The last thing she remembered was the man stepping around the counter. Then darkness. --- When Ran opened her eyes again, she found herself lying in a comfortable bed. Clean sheets. Warm blankets. No pain. At least, not much. She stared at the ceiling. "...Am I dead?" The door opened. A familiar man entered carrying fresh bandages and a bowl of water. "Oh, you're awake." Ran blinked. "Wait..." She looked around. "This isn't the afterlife?" The man paused. "Not unless the afterlife has room service." For the first time in days, Ran laughed. Then immediately regretted it as her ribs protested. The man sat beside the bed and began changing her bandages. Ran watched him carefully. "Aren't you going to ask?" "Ask what?" "Who I am." The man shrugged. "If you wanted me to know, you'd tell me." "...You know, most people would have recognized me." "Should I?" Ran stared. For a moment she didn't know whether to be offended or relieved. Eventually she settled on relieved. The man finished securing the bandages. "There." Ran looked down. "Thank you." The man nodded. "You can stay as long as you need." No conditions. No bargains. No expectations. Just kindness. For reasons she couldn't explain... That hurt more than any wound. Because it had been so long since anyone offered it. And for the first time in her life... Ran felt safe.
