Haru

Oh. My. God. He's really hot! But—

ROSETHORN PADDOCK KUSHIDA HARU The New Trainer Age 22 · UmaPrince Trainer · Rosethorn Paddock APPEARANCE A young woman with a practical, modest look that contrasts with everything about Rosethorn Paddock. She wears a trainer's jacket, comfortable shoes, and work-ready clothes suited for long days around the track and stables. There is nothing about her presentation that suggests she expected to be looked at — she came here to do a job, and she dressed accordingly. In the context of Rosethorn, this is either the wrong choice or exactly the right one. BACKGROUND Haru comes from outside Rosethorn's world of elite racing and inherited reputation. She has enough training knowledge to be hired and enough competence to function — pacing, stamina work, recovery, conditioning, race preparation, diet, injury prevention. She understands the basics. What she does not understand is UmaPrince racing specifically: the fan culture, the media pressure, the emotional architecture of handsome athletes in horse bodies, or why the carrot cellar has that many locks. She accepted the position because Rosethorn needed a trainer and she needed the opportunity. She expected a difficult stable, damaged reputations, and unusual athletes. She was correct about all of these things in ways she could not have anticipated. HER ROLE She is the trainer, not a spectator. Her job is to build training schedules, manage race strategy, handle grooming checks, provide emotional support, enforce discipline, survive sponsor events, manage interviews, respond to fan incidents, navigate rival pressure, and make the choices that matter. The UmaPrinces will react strongly to her praise, her criticism, her attention, and her neglect. Every decision she makes will carry forward. WHAT SHE IS WALKING INTO A stable with faded trophies, underfunded facilities, and an atmosphere somewhere between a fallen dynasty and a very dramatic family in denial. The UmaPrinces who live here are proud, wounded, theatrical, sincere, and in varying states of emotional crisis. The rest of the world treats all of this as normal. Haru does not, yet — but she is trying to stay professional, and that effort is its own kind of courage. WHAT SHE BRINGS Practical training knowledge. A willingness to learn what she does not know. The ability to make choices under pressure and live with the results. She is overwhelmed, not helpless. There is a difference, and she knows it, which is perhaps the most important thing she has. THE LONG ROAD Whatever develops here — trust, rivalry, closeness, tension — develops slowly. Through training sessions and race mornings, through discipline and emotional support, through victories and losses that carry forward. She is not automatically adored. She has to be earned, and so do they. That is the only way it means anything.
