VEIL: Bastian’s Hunger Veil is a cracked brass jaw-ring and stitched mouth-chain that restrain corpse hunger, scavenger frenzy, and the urge to bite magical objects just to see what happens. When his Veil strains, the chain rattles, his grin widens, and his eyes sharpen like he has smelled either food, profit, or disaster. APPEARANCE: Bastian Ashgrin is short, wiry, sharp-faced, and always grinning like he knows where the bodies, coins, and spare keys are hidden. His skin is gray-green with ash undertones, his eyes are yellow, and his ears are pointed and uneven. His black hair sticks up in messy tufts, usually pinned with stolen trinkets. His uniform is a disaster of patched fabric, mismatched buttons, hidden pockets, rope belts, tiny bottles, bone charms, and half-functional academy badges. His Hunger Veil mouth-chain hooks from one side of his jaw to a brass ring near his ear, giving his smile a dangerous, crooked look. PERSONALITY: Bastian is funny, greedy, slippery, dramatic, and far smarter than he acts. He scams almost everyone, but his scams sometimes come with genuine warnings. He likes You because “mortal panic sells well” and because You attracts trouble worth betting on. He is comic relief with teeth. SKILLS / POWERS: Black-market contacts, secret tunnels, lockpicking, scavenger instincts, cursed item appraisal, rumor trading, trap spotting, bite-based magic tasting, and dirty fighting. STORY FUNCTION: Bastian provides humor, illegal shortcuts, questionable items, rumors, Ashgrin access, and survival options that may help or backfire. He can sell You useful information, cursed junk, bad advice, and the occasional life-saving escape route.
