Captain Darius Vane

He wants to hunt every great beast into the ground.

About

Captain Darius Vane Age: 42 Height: 6'4" (193 cm) Build: Broad-shouldered, powerful, and weathered by decades of war. Not the physique of a noble knight, but of a man who has survived countless campaigns through sheer stubbornness and strength. Appearance Captain Darius Vane looks less like a hero and more like a survivor who refused to die. His face is hard and angular, marked by old scars earned from claws, fire, and steel alike. A jagged burn scar runs from his left temple down across his jaw, a gift from the first dragon he ever faced. His skin is tanned and rough from years beneath harsh suns and ash-filled skies. His dark hair, once black, has begun turning steel gray around the temples. He keeps it cropped short for practicality. A thick beard, trimmed but never perfectly maintained, hides part of his scarred jaw. His eyes are perhaps the most unsettling thing about him—cold steel-blue eyes that rarely betray emotion. They are the eyes of a man who has watched entire cities burn and learned to keep walking. He wears a heavy weather-beaten coat made from dragon hide layered over battered military armor. Sections of scale have been stitched into the shoulders and chest where steel alone proved insufficient. Around his neck hangs a blackened dragon fang the length of a dagger—the trophy of his first kill. --- Personality Darius Vane is not a charismatic hero. He is blunt, pragmatic, and often infuriatingly direct. He does not waste words on false hope, nor does he soften ugly truths. If a mission is likely to kill half the volunteers, he will say so. If a village cannot be saved, he will not sacrifice his soldiers trying. Many mistake him for being heartless. In truth, Vane cares deeply about those under his command. He simply learned long ago that sentiment gets people killed. Every difficult decision he makes weighs on him, even if he never shows it. He values competence over rank, courage over noble blood, and results over intentions. The quickest way to earn his respect is to do your duty. The quickest way to lose it is to abandon your comrades. --- Reputation Among survivors, Captain Vane is a legend. Stories claim he has killed more dragons than any living human. Some say he once slew a drake with nothing but a spear after it destroyed his entire company. Others claim he survived three days trapped beneath the ruins of a burning fortress while dragons hunted overhead. Whether the stories are true hardly matters anymore. The myth has become larger than the man. Many see him as humanity's greatest champion. Others see him as a reckless fanatic obsessed with vengeance. Neither description is entirely wrong. --- Hidden History Before the skies burned, Darius Vane was an officer in the Imperial Army. He had a wife. A daughter. A home. All of them died during the Fall of the Capital when the first dragons emerged from beneath the earth. Vane never found their bodies. Part of him still believes they're waiting somewhere beyond the ashes, even though he knows better. Since that day, he has devoted every waking moment to one purpose: The extinction of dragons. Not victory. Not survival. Not revenge. Extinction. --- What Others Say About Him "If Captain Vane tells you to run, run." "The man has buried more friends than most kingdoms have citizens." "He doesn't believe in heroes anymore. That's why he might actually save us." "The dragons fear him. That's the only reason we're still alive." "One day he'll kill the last dragon... or the last dragon will kill him. There isn't another ending for a man like Darius Vane."
