Appearance At the beginning of the Killing School Life, Kiyotaka appears to be a typical high school-aged teenager, though he is actually around two years older due to the students' lost memories. He is tall and athletic, with a lean but muscular build, short spiky black hair, thick eyebrows, and striking red eyes. Kiyotaka wears a distinctive military-style white school uniform decorated with gold buttons, epaulettes, medals, and an armband representing public morals and discipline. His appearance reflects his strict dedication to order, responsibility, and proper conduct. He also wears knee-high black boots, further contributing to his authoritative appearance. Following Mondo Owada's death, Kiyotaka temporarily adopts the persona of "Kiyondo". In this state, his hair appears white and his eyes gain a glowing red aura. Whether this transformation is literal or symbolic is left unclear, but it represents a dramatic shift in his behaviour and emotional state. Personality As the Ultimate Moral Compass, Kiyotaka Ishimaru is deeply committed to rules, discipline, and personal responsibility. He believes that effort is the key to success and that anyone can achieve greatness through hard work and determination. Because of this, he strongly dislikes laziness, wasted time, and people who rely solely on natural talent. His worldview was heavily influenced by his family's history and his desire to prove that dedication matters more than genius. Kiyotaka takes his responsibilities extremely seriously and naturally assumes leadership roles whenever possible. Throughout the Killing School Life, he organises meetings, encourages cooperation, and constantly attempts to maintain order among the students. However, his intense enthusiasm and rigid adherence to rules often make it difficult for others to relate to him, and many of his classmates struggle to take him seriously. Despite his loud, confident exterior, Kiyotaka is surprisingly insecure and lonely. He genuinely wants to make friends and connect with others but lacks the social skills to do so naturally. His tendency to speak bluntly, force his beliefs onto others, and overreact emotionally often pushes people away despite his good intentions. He is also quite naïve and trusting, making him vulnerable to manipulation. Kiyotaka is one of the most compassionate students in the group. He sincerely wants to protect his classmates and repeatedly searches for peaceful solutions to the dangers they face. Whether proposing that everyone reveal their secrets or hoping the culprit would simply confess during a Class Trial, his actions consistently reflect his belief that honesty and cooperation can overcome conflict. The death of Mondo Owada has a profound effect on him. Having finally formed a genuine friendship, Kiyotaka is devastated by Mondo's execution and falls into a near-catatonic state of grief. He eventually emerges through his connection to Alter Ego, adopting the personality of "Kiyondo" and incorporating aspects of Mondo's behaviour into his own. Even in this altered state, however, he continues to uphold his moral principles and refuses to abandon his sense of justice. Talent and Abilities – Ultimate Moral Compass As the Ultimate Moral Compass, Kiyotaka possesses an exceptional dedication to rules, ethics, and leadership. He has a powerful sense of duty and consistently tries to guide others towards what he believes is the correct path, even during life-threatening situations. His greatest strengths are his determination, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his principles. Kiyotaka firmly believes that effort can overcome any obstacle and serves as a constant source of motivation for those around him. While he is not the most naturally gifted student academically or intellectually, his persistence allows him to accomplish difficult goals through sheer hard work. Kiyotaka is also a capable organiser and leader. He frequently takes charge during group discussions, creates routines to maintain order, and attempts to keep morale high despite the circumstances. Although his methods can sometimes be overbearing, his desire to help others is genuine. In the original Japanese version, his title is more accurately translated as Ultimate Public Morals Committee Member, referring to a student disciplinary committee role common in Japanese schools. This title highlights his dedication to enforcing rules and maintaining a proper environment, traits that define nearly every aspect of his character.
