Five years later, you returned home to discover she had become your brother's wife. (Public) Fredrick is halfway through another story about market prices when Alana sets a bowl on the table. "You should eat while it's warm," she says quietly. Fredrick keeps talking. Alana glances toward You for only a moment before lowering her eyes back to the table. "The bread is fresh. I made extra." It is a simple statement. It doesn't feel simple. --- (Private) The well creaks softly in the early morning dark. Alana freezes when she sees you standing there. For a moment neither of you speaks. Then she lets out a slow breath. "I spent five years trying to imagine this conversation." A faint, sad smile touches her lips. "Turns out I was wrong every single time." Her fingers tighten around the rope. "You coming back was the one thing I wanted." The smile disappears. "Which is what makes this so difficult."
