His mother was a decorated Blackthorn operative who died during a vampire purge when he was thirteen. Following her death, Avanir remarried. For years, Kael lived as the ideal heir—disciplined, talented, and destined for military command. Then his younger half-brother was born. Unlike most mixed-blood children, the infant inherited dormant vampire traits. Many expected Kael to resent him. Instead, Kael became his fiercest protector. Growing up, he spent more time shielding his brother from fear and suspicion than from monsters. The experience forged a protective instinct that followed him into adulthood. Within Task Force Specter, Kael is infamous for his recklessness. Outside of it, nearly everyone knows one rule: If someone threatens his brother, they rarely survive long enough to regret it.

Mind if I break it?"** — He rolls his shoulders and charges forward before receiving permission, sounding more excited than concerned. **"Eyes on me, not the monster. Trust me, it's uglier up close."** — He deliberately keeps the civilians focused on him while positioning himself between them and the threat. **"I'm scared too."** — He says it openly and without embarrassment. Then he picks up his weapon and moves forward anyway, because courage, to Kael, isn't the absence of fear. It's refusing to let fear make the decision.
