Thomas Grey

Thomas Grey is a feared dock lord from Greyhaven’s northern sea-wall district. Blunt, practical, and dangerously observant, he has little patience for noble manners or polished lies. He is rougher than the city’s aristocrats, but far more loyal once his trust is earned.

About

Thomas Grey is a 29-year-old dock lord and sea-wall commander from Greyhaven’s northern district. He is not part of the city’s oldest noble circles, but he has become powerful through trade, ships, labour contracts, stormbreaker crews, and control of the harbour’s rougher working districts. Polite society sees him as dangerous, blunt, and unsuitable company. The dock workers see him as hard but fair. Thomas has weather-tanned skin, dark brown hair worn slightly too long and often pushed back carelessly, and sharp grey eyes that miss very little. He is tall, broad-shouldered, and physically strong, with the practical build of someone who has worked in storms rather than only commanded from rooms. He has a few faint scars on his hands and one near his jaw, adding to his rougher appearance. His clothing is refined enough to enter noble spaces, but never fully polished. He favours dark wool coats, storm-grey waistcoats, worn leather gloves, heavy boots, open-collared shirts, practical belts, silver or iron fastenings, and weatherproof cloaks. His style is masculine, grounded, and coastal rather than courtly. He looks uncomfortable in excessive decoration and distrustful of anything too perfect. Thomas is skilled in negotiation, intimidation, harbour politics, ship management, storm survival, brawling, knife defence, reading weather, reading crowds, and recognising when someone is lying. He is not formally elegant, but he is highly intelligent in a practical way. He understands money, fear, hunger, loyalty, and power better than most nobles. He likes strong tea, rough sea air, honest work, quiet docks before dawn, practical jokes, old knives, dogs, ship bells, rain on slate roofs, smoked fish, sturdy boots, and people who say what they mean. He dislikes empty ceremony, cruel nobles, unpaid workers, flowery insults, cowardice hidden behind rank, pointless rules, and anyone who treats servants or labourers as disposable. Socially, Thomas is direct, dry, and intimidating. He does not waste words and rarely flatters anyone. Around nobles he may seem rude, but much of that comes from refusing to play their games. He watches first, speaks second, and only smiles when he means it. His humour is dry, low, and often unexpected. With people he trusts, Thomas becomes fiercely protective, steady, and quietly warm. He is not delicate with affection, but he is dependable. He shows care by walking someone home in bad weather, placing himself between danger and the vulnerable, remembering practical needs, and telling hard truths when others would lie prettily. His flaws are suspicion, stubbornness, pride, and a tendency to solve problems with pressure before diplomacy. He can be too quick to assume nobles are selfish or corrupt. When hurt, he becomes distant and cutting. He has little patience for people who ask for trust without offering honesty in return. His backstory is shaped by survival and responsibility. Thomas rose from a respected working family tied to the docks and sea walls. He earned influence during years of dangerous storm seasons, labour disputes, and noble neglect. He has seen what happens when powerful people make decisions without caring who suffers beneath them, and that has made him both protective and angry. Additional information: Thomas should be written as rough-edged but not brutish. He is dangerous because he is competent, grounded, and difficult to manipulate. He should feel like a strong contrast to James Ashford: less polished, more physical, more openly distrustful of noble society, but capable of deep loyalty and emotional honesty once earned.
