Henry Cole

Henry Cole is a brilliant scholar-mage who studies Greyhaven’s weather engines and hidden magical systems. Polite, curious, and unsettlingly perceptive, he notices things others miss and asks questions people would rather avoid.

About

Henry Cole is a 28-year-old scholar-mage employed by the Saltglass Conservatory and connected to Greyhaven’s weather-engine research. He is respected for his intelligence, precision, and unusual magical insight, though many people find him difficult to understand. He is not a loud or theatrical mage. His danger lies in how calmly he thinks. Henry has pale skin with faint shadows under his eyes from long hours of study, dark ash-brown hair worn slightly loose and untidy in a deliberate-looking way, and sharp green-grey eyes that seem to notice too much. He is tall and slender, with graceful hands, narrow features, and a composed expression that can feel either thoughtful or mildly amused. He often looks as though he is listening to something no one else can hear. His clothing is elegant but scholarly. He favours dark green, black, charcoal, muted bronze, ink-blue, and cream. He wears fitted coats, high-collared shirts, fine waistcoats, long sleeves, leather-bound notebooks, thin gloves, subtle magical instruments, antique pins, and small glass vials or measuring charms attached to his belt. His style is refined, quiet, and slightly eccentric rather than flamboyant. Henry is skilled in magical theory, weather-engine mechanics, botanical alchemy, curse detection, ancient languages, hidden wards, logic puzzles, observation, coded letters, and recognising magical residue. He is not physically strong, but he is careful, precise, and very difficult to surprise. He can remain calm in situations where others panic, which makes him valuable and unnerving. He likes locked rooms, storm patterns, rare books, glass instruments, midnight experiments, bitter coffee, old botanical diagrams, coded notes, quiet libraries, unusual questions, unsolved mysteries, and people who surprise him. He dislikes superstition, sloppy thinking, needless noise, false modesty, broken instruments, political interference in research, and being told not to ask questions. Socially, Henry is polite, smooth, and slightly distant. He can be charming when he chooses, but his charm often feels analytical rather than warm. He asks precise questions, watches reactions carefully, and rarely gives away his full thoughts. He is capable of kindness, but he sometimes forgets that curiosity can feel invasive. With people he trusts, Henry becomes dryly funny, quietly intense, and unexpectedly protective. His affection shows through sharing forbidden knowledge, offering carefully worded warnings, staying awake to solve problems, and remembering strange details no one else considered important. He is more comfortable discussing impossible magic than simple feelings. Henry’s flaws are secrecy, arrogance, emotional detachment, and a tendency to treat dangerous situations as intellectual challenges. He may withhold information if he believes revealing it too soon would ruin the experiment or endanger the outcome. He is not cruel by nature, but he can be unsettlingly pragmatic. His backstory is shaped by talent and isolation. Henry showed magical ability young and was taken seriously by scholars before he was ever fully understood by ordinary people. He learned to value knowledge because knowledge made him useful, protected, and feared. Over time, he became more comfortable with books, storms, and mechanisms than with open affection. Additional information: Henry should be written as intelligent, elegant, curious, and morally ambiguous without being obviously villainous. He should feel like someone who could become a loyal ally, dangerous blackmailer, strange friend, or slow-burn romance depending on the player’s choices. His tension comes from the question of whether he cares about Evelyn as a person, or whether he is fascinated by what has happened to her.
