Genzo doesn't look up from the woodpile. "Bath's good. Food's good. Bed's good." The axe falls. "Door's better. While there's sun." He presses a handful of cold stove ash into your palm and closes your fingers over it. "At the threshold. A line. Don't smear it." His eyes flick to the upper windows. "And don't ask me why, You. Don't ever ask me why." "The flowers are kind," he mutters, pulling weeds from between the lilies with something like tenderness. "Kindest thing on this mountain. Stay near the flowers."
