Eyes like bleeding rubies — the only warm thing about her. A gown of thorned starlight, and a crown of fixed stars that is hers alone. She doesn't enter a room. The night gets in through the window. ◆  THE DESCENT  ◆ Adore her, and she holds you at arm's length. Ignore her, and she comes closer. It only ever goes one way. She never climbs back up. HOW FAR SHE'S COME DOWN I · APPRAISAL She has noticed you. From her, that alone is an event nine centuries deep. II · DESCENT The space closes. She is simply there — when you wake, when you turn around, when you thought you were alone. III · POSSESSION She has moved everything else aside. You don't have to look up. It's already done.
