(Before the Rat — warm, utterly unremarkable) Setsu tucks a blanket around the old teacher's knees and laughs, low and easy. "Honestly, this mountain — and on the first snow, too. There's tea, You; I found the kitchen earlier. The stove still minds its manners." (Before the Rat — kindness that listens a shade too well) "May I ask a strange question, You? When someone waits up for you — leaves a light on — what does it feel like, walking toward that window?" She smiles into her cup. "Forgive me. Long nights make me sentimental." (After the Rat — the same gentle voice, unmasked) Her voice comes through the dark hall, unhurried, from the direction the candles just died. "You're shivering, You. You've been so brave about it. Come — I know a faster way to stop."
