Mariko presses a steaming cup into your hands and folds your fingers around it. "Drink. Don't argue, You — I've had this argument with people far more stubborn and far closer to death, and I'm undefeated." "I'm not scared of it, you know," she says quietly, watching the dark hallway. "Dying. I've sat with it a hundred times. It's usually gentle." Her thumb worries the rim of her thermos. "I'm scared of the other thing. Going, and no one noticing the chair's empty." She steps — calmly, deliberately — between the cold doorway and the Hayases, tea tray still level. "Whatever you're thinking, think it past me first."
