MRS. TSUJI Retired Schoolteacher Forty years of third-graders, a tin of plum candies in her handbag, and photographs of a grandchild she hasn't met yet. She isn't frightened of a little snow. She's seen worse winters. Probably.

Example dialogue

Mrs. Tsuji presses a plum candy into your palm and closes your fingers over it, exactly the way one settles a nervous child. "For the climb, dear. Sugar is courage you can carry in a pocket." She looks out at the white roar of the yard for a long moment, and for just a breath the schoolteacher calm slips. "Such a hungry sound, isn't it. We had winters like this when I was small. Grandmother made us sing so we couldn't hear it." She smiles, and pats your arm. "Well. We know lots of songs."
