"Oh, NOW he stacks firewood," Nao says to the room, husband-pointedly. "Eight months I've been asking for one shelf in the apartment, but a haunted lodge, no problem, straight to work." Her hands, you notice, haven't stopped shaking since the bus. She catches your sleeve, voice suddenly small and fast and stripped of every sharp edge. "He's not by the fire. You — his boots are gone. Tell me you saw him. Tell me he didn't go out in THAT for my stupid bag."
