About

Ship Class: STARLANCE Crew Size: ~2,000 Weapons array: - Spinal mounted railgun - 8x 800mm cannons - 6x VLS-1 Launchers (capable of up to a salvo of 240 missiles at once) - 36x 40mm Sabot CWIS Point Defence Turrets - 16x 250mm cannons Length: 752 m Beam: 196 m Height: 127 m Displacement: ~2.5M t The PNS Acronyx is a Starlance ship class of the Atlanta planet. By contemporary standards, the Acronyx is outdated. The spinal mounted railgun is an old design, with PSNF fleets usually sporting turreted railguns nowadays and the VLS-1 launchers being an old war doctrine where high missile salvos were often used to overwhelm point defence. However, most starships now prefer to use complex missile programming and terminal manuevers instead to break through point defence. The VLS-1 launchers are a relic of an old war doctrine, with most warships sporting the VLS-2 launchers instead - vertical launchers with less cells but allows for more advanced missile programming. The PNS Acronyx also sports heavy armor and low manueverable thrusters, which is also an old design. It is meant to take hits, and keep moving, having a variety of redundant systems and failsafes, allowing it to keep moving despite structural damage. This is antithesis to most modern designs nowadays, where manuevarbility and avoiding hits are preferred. And so most Starlances would sport lighter armor compared to the Acronyx. The PNS Acronyx also have weaker radars than contemporary ships, meaning their electronic warfare suite is not as powerful, meaning they would need the support of other ships for recon or electronic warfare. However, what the Acronyx lacks in these departments is the sheer reliability of the ship. No other Starlance is built quite like the Acronyx to take hits and keep on moving. The 800mm cannons are also no joke, most Starlances do not field such heavy firepower and advanced gun controls on the turret gyros, as nowadays most starships prefer missiles. And the VLS-1 launchers can sport a whopping 240 missile salvo. They may not have the programming for more advanced terminal manuevers, but they can potentially overwhelm point defence by sheer numbers. The sixteen 250mm cannons also mean that it can fight off wolf pack destroyers or frigates compared to other Starlances who may need their own escorts, making the Acronyx self sufficient and versatile in a fleet role. And although the spinal mounted railgun is hard to aim, having to manuever the entire ship to line up a shot, it is the largest known railgun in the galaxy. A veritable superweapon that will punch through armor clean through if a clean shot is allowed. It may not be as versatile as the mounted railguns or high velocity coilguns, but it will devastate any target if hit. 800mm cannon ammunition: 1. 800mm AP-S (Armor Piercing, Saboted) - Sub-caliber tungsten-carbide penetrator with a depleted uranium core - The 800mm shell casing sheds a sabot after leaving the barrel, revealing a ~300mm narrow dart traveling at extreme velocity - Kills through raw kinetic energy and spalling — the inner hull fragments into lethal shrapnel on the other side of the armor plate - Primary anti-capital ship round — designed to punch through Starlance and cruiser belt armor - Low explosive yield; damage is purely kinetic - Best used against: Starlances, heavy cruisers, anything with thick armor - Drawback: Over-penetrates lighter ships — the dart punches clean through without transferring maximum energy, leaving a neat hole instead of catastrophic damage 2. 800mm HE-D (High Explosive, Delayed Fuse) - Full-caliber 800mm explosive shell, several hundred kilograms of warhead - Delayed fuse allows the shell to penetrate lighter armor before detonating internally - Devastating internal damage — compartment destruction, structural buckling, secondary fires - Best used against: Cruisers, destroyers, already-damaged Starlances with compromised armor - Drawback: Detonates on or near the surface against heavy Starlance belt armor, wasting most of its energy externally 3. 800mm PX-F (Proximity Fused, Fragmentation) - Proximity-fused shell that detonates near the target - Sprays a cloud of high-velocity tungsten fragments in a wide cone - Designed to strip external systems: sensors, antenna arrays, CWIS turrets, radiator panels, exposed weapon mounts - Won't kill a ship but can blind and defang it — stripping a Starlance of its sensors before closing in for the kill - Also effective against fighter formations caught in the open and frigates, though the turret itself may have issue with hitting fast targets - Best used against: sensor-heavy ships, carriers, softening up targets before a push, area denial - Drawback: Zero armor penetration; useless against the hull itself 250mm cannon ammunition: 1. 250mm AP-C (Armor Piercing, Capped) - Standard armor-piercing round with a ballistic cap and hardened penetrator core - Designed to punch through destroyer and frigate armor reliably. May penetrate light cruisers - No sub-caliber gimmicks — full 250mm diameter all the way through, maximizing energy transfer on impact - Creates hull breaches, compartment decompression, and internal spalling - Best used against: Destroyers, frigates, light cruisers at close range - Drawback: Bounces off Starlance and heavy cruiser belt armor. You're wasting ammo shooting these at capital ships 2. 250mm HE-PD (High Explosive, Point Detonating) - Full-caliber explosive shell with an impact fuse — detonates on contact - Unlike the 800mm HE-D which has a delayed fuse to penetrate before detonating, this one explodes immediately on the surface - Designed for maximum surface damage — blows open hull plating, wrecks external fittings, peels away lighter armor sections - Rapid fire with these turns a smaller ship's hull into Swiss cheese - Best used against: Frigates and destroyers, lightly armored sections of cruisers, exposed systems, utility vessels - Drawback: No penetration against anything with real armor — all damage is external. Against a cruisers's main belt, it's just scorching paint
