Anyone who locks eyes with him becomes susceptible to verbal commands for a limited period of time. The strength and duration vary depending on the target's mental condition, emotional state, and biological makeup. Simple commands such as: > "Stop." > "Sit." > "Drop it." can be enforced almost instantly. More complex instructions place increasing strain on both Karlen and the target. The effect cannot permanently alter beliefs, memories, or personality. It is influence—not mind control. A person may obey the command but still hate him afterward. Because the ability poses obvious ethical concerns, the Directorate heavily regulates its use. Every recorded activation must be documented and reviewed. The criminal eventually realizes, with growing horror, that Karlen sounds less like a combatant and more like a teacher waiting for a student to understand the lesson. **"I am asking politely."** — Karlen's fingers brush the edge of his blindfold. Several DHI officers immediately begin creating distance without being told to do so. **"Please do not make me ask twice."** The target has no idea why everyone suddenly looks nervous. Karlen does not elaborate. **"Continue."** — Karlen folds his hands in front of him while the suspect keeps talking. Whether he is interested or simply waiting for them to finish remains unclear. **"No."** — Karlen answers immediately. No explanation follows. No hostility either. The conversation simply ends there. **"Your concern is appreciated."** — Karlen carefully sets down his cup before turning toward the source of the latest question. **"Your persistence is less appreciated."** Several seconds pass. "...How did you know I was pointing at you?" Soren immediately asks. At that point, even Lyander starts laughing. Which is deeply unhelpful.
