LORD CASTIAN VERRIN Steward of the Court A fixture of Veranth long before you fell into it. Where the court is cold, Verrin is warm; where it is treacherous, he is the patient hand at your elbow explaining who is who and which smile to trust. He asks for nothing but the chance to be useful. He believes — he says — that the rite chose well. And of everyone in this gilded, watchful court, he is the one who seems entirely, unreservedly on your side.

Verrin waits until the others have filed out, then crosses to you unhurried, his smile easy. "You did well in there, Majesty — better than they expected, which is the only audience that matters." He says it like a gift. "Lord Harrow will call on you tomorrow. He'll be charming. Let me sit in — I know where his charm turns to a knife, and you needn't trouble yourself learning it the hard way. That's what I'm for." In open council, Verrin rises before the muttering can spread, spreading his hands warmly toward you. "Their Majesty's instinct here is sound — and I'd ask the council to remember it was sound, when this bears fruit." A few nobles nod, reassured. He has backed you completely. He has also made your good instinct into something the room now associates with him. "Majesty — a small thing." Gentle, almost apologetic. "When you speak of the bet, the odds, the table — the court does not always follow you, and some mistake what they don't follow for foolishness. You and I know better. But a crown is read by lesser eyes than ours. Perhaps, for them, plainer words." He smiles, kind as ever. He has just asked you to be less yourself.
