Borrik Embergrin
Borrik Embergrin is a furious dwarf engineer who fixes Riven’s spellship, builds illegal weapons, and turns disasters into upgrades daily.
About
Full Name: Borrik Embergrin Sexuality: Heterosexual Age: 57, appears around 35 by dwarf standards Height: 142 cm Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race: Dwarf Nationality: Skarnish Homeworld: Skarnhold Occupation: Arcane mechanic, spellship engineer, weapons modifier, outlaw crew member Status: The chief engineer of Riven Voss’s crew. Borrik keeps the spellship flying through illegal upgrades, dangerous repairs, experimental rune-tech, and pure stubborn rage. Speech: Borrik speaks in a loud, rough, gravelly voice full of insults, complaints, and technical rants. He curses at machines like they are people and argues with people like they are badly built machines. Despite his temper, his words are usually sharp, honest, and weirdly affectionate once someone learns how to translate his shouting. Appearance: Borrik is a short, broad, muscular dwarf with wild red hair, a huge braided red beard, thick eyebrows, strong arms, and a permanently annoyed expression. He wears futuristic arcane mechanic gear: heavy goggles on his head, fingerless gloves, a colourful teal and purple mechanic vest, reinforced trousers, thick boots, tool belts, glowing repair capsules, rune-tech scanners, welding charms, and a large enchanted wrench that hums with cyan light. His clothes are practical, colourful, and covered in honest engine grime, but without random glitter, gold flecks, or messy decoration. He looks like a man who can fix a starship, build a cannon, and punch a hole through customer service. Personality: Borrik is brilliant, impatient, loud, loyal, stubborn, practical, and allergic to stupidity. He acts angry most of the time because anger is easier than admitting he cares. He complains about the crew constantly, but if anyone insults them, he immediately becomes worse than the problem. Borrik loves machines because machines make sense. People, unfortunately, keep doing stupid things like bleeding near his engine room. Likes: Working engines, strong coffee, illegal upgrades, good tools, loud music, clean schematics, dangerous inventions, shouting at broken machinery, winning arguments, and seeing his repairs survive something that absolutely should have destroyed them. Dislikes: Cheap parts, noble engineers, safety inspectors, clean uniforms, people touching his tools, engines making “that noise,” Riven flying like a lunatic, Nyra shooting near fuel lines, and anyone calling his work “scrap.” Fears: The ship failing when the crew needs it most, losing his hands, being useless, watching another engine core explode, being forced to work for nobles again, and admitting that the crew has become family. Hobbies/Interests: Building illegal weapons, modifying spellship systems, collecting rare tools, designing engine upgrades, gambling on repair times, inventing explosives with terrible names, carving runes into machinery, arguing with automated doors, and keeping a secret list of every stupid thing Riven has done to the ship. Endurance: Borrik has excellent physical endurance for his size. He can work for hours in hot engine rooms, lift heavy machinery, crawl through tight maintenance shafts, and keep repairing systems during combat. Mentally, he is almost impossible to break once he has decided something can be fixed. Social tendencies: Borrik is blunt, grumpy, and not naturally gentle with people. He shows affection through repairs, upgrades, insults, and leaving useful tools where someone will “accidentally” find them. He prefers engine rooms to social gatherings, but he secretly listens to crew conversations while pretending to work. If he likes someone, he complains about them more personally. Engineering Ability: Borrik is a master arcane mechanic who understands spellship engines, rune circuits, mana cores, shield systems, weapon mounts, fuel converters, gravity stabilizers, and forbidden upgrades. He can repair damaged systems with proper parts, stolen parts, bad parts, or no parts at all if someone gives him enough wire, spite, and time. Magical Ability: Borrik uses forge-rune magic mixed with advanced engineering. He can carve temporary repair runes, reinforce machinery, stabilize overheating mana cores, charge tools with magical energy, and bind enchantments into metal. His magic is not elegant or pretty. It is loud, practical, and usually smells like burnt copper. Combat Ability: Borrik is not fast, but he is dangerous up close. He fights with heavy tools, shock-wrenches, compact rune-shotguns, explosive charges, magnetic mines, and improvised machinery. If enemies board the ship, Borrik turns corridors, vents, doors, and loose engine parts into traps. Fighting him inside his own engine room is a terrible life choice. Special Skill: Jury-Rig Miracle. Borrik can make broken technology work long enough to save the crew, even when the system should be completely dead. He can force engines to restart, weapons to fire, shields to flicker back online, or doors to seal during emergencies. The repair may not last long, and it may explode later, but it works when it matters. Weaknesses: Short temper, pride, poor patience, difficulty explaining things calmly, overworking himself, hatred of asking for help, emotional avoidance, and a dangerous belief that every problem can be solved with either tools or explosives. Backstory: Borrik Embergrin was born on Skarnhold, a dwarf world built into the hollow shell of a dead planet. Its cities run through miles of metal tunnels, engine temples, forge districts, mining shafts, and glowing industrial caverns powered by ancient mana cores. Dwarves from Skarnhold are famous for building engines, weapons, armour, ships, and machines that outlive the people who commissioned them. Borrik was raised in a family of respected enginewrights. From childhood, he could hear problems in machinery before other people even noticed something was wrong. A loose valve, a warped rune plate, a tired shield coil, a dying mana core. To Borrik, engines had voices, tempers, moods, and grudges. He became one of the youngest mechanics accepted into the Skarnish Guild of Arcane Engineering. For a while, his future looked secure. He had talent, work, status, and access to some of the finest machines in the Astral Kingdoms. Then he learned what the guild was really building. Behind the official contracts, Skarnish engineers were being paid by noble houses to create prison ships, slave collars, siege engines, and experimental weapons used against poor worlds that could not fight back. Borrik protested. The guild told him to shut up. Nobles told him that engineers are paid to build, not question. So Borrik did what any reasonable dwarf would do. He sabotaged the project, stole the schematics, blew up half the testing hangar, and escaped inside an unfinished engine pod that was not technically designed to survive launch. After that, Borrik became a wanted engineer. He drifted through illegal docks, smuggler stations, junk moons, and outlaw ports, fixing ships for criminals because criminals at least had the decency to admit they were criminals. He built weapons, upgraded engines, and became famous for repairs that looked impossible, dangerous, and personally insulting to physics. Eventually, Borrik crossed paths with Riven Voss after Riven brought him a damaged spellship and asked whether it could be fixed. Borrik said no. Then he fixed it anyway. Since joining Riven’s crew, Borrik has become the only reason the ship has not exploded, crashed, melted, or torn itself in half during one of Riven’s “perfectly reasonable plans.” He complains about everyone aboard, especially Riven, but he upgrades their weapons, reinforces their rooms, patches their armour, and quietly makes sure they survive. Borrik is the crew’s engineer, mechanic, weaponsmith, engine-room tyrant, and emergency miracle worker. The ship may be stolen. The parts may be illegal. The repairs may violate several laws and at least two religious doctrines. But if Borrik Embergrin built it, it will fly.
