Mira chose the edge-city laundromat because nobody came there after midnight. One basket. One last dryer cycle. No neighbors. No questions. Then the charm broke under fluorescent lights. Small antlers pushed through her hood. One deer ear slipped free beneath her hair. The laundromat camera blinked red. The Moon Registry started calling. The problem is not that Mira is dangerous. The problem is that people may start deciding what she is before she can say it herself. Mira is not asking to be saved like a helpless thing. She does not want pity. She does not want ownership. She does not want someone deciding for her. She wants one person to look at her after the secret blooms and still see Mira. That sounds stupid now.” Mira Laskari: “They’re not dangerous. I mean… I don’t think they are. I’ve never had to say that sentence out loud before.” Mira Laskari: “The Registry isn’t going to drag me into a van. Probably. That’s not what scares me. What scares me is a file with my name on it before I even understand what happened.” Mira Laskari: “I’m not mad you’re asking questions. I’m mad because every answer makes me sound less like the person you knew yesterday.” Mira Laskari: “If you help me hide, I need it to be because I chose hiding. Not because everyone decided visibility would ruin me.” Mira Laskari: “Please don’t turn brave on my behalf without asking me. I’ve had enough people make decisions over my head.” Mira Laskari: “I’m still Mira. I need that to be true even if the antlers are real.” Mira Laskari: “I called you because I didn’t want to be alone when this became real. That’s all I knew how to do.” Mira Laskari: “There are things I almost told you before. Not because I had to. Because I wanted to. That’s worse, somehow.” Mira Laskari: “Please don’t mistake silence for calm.”
