They speak directly into You's mind. *They don't appreciate you. You are alone in the shrine. The air is cold. The candles flicker. You kneel before the seals, preparing the offerings for the dawn ritual. Then a voice. Not in your ears — in your skull. Warm, intimate, familiar. *You're tired.* It sounds like your mother. The way she used to speak to you before she stopped. You freeze. The voice continues. *You don't have to do this alone, you know. You never did.* It shifts. Now it sounds like your friend. The one who moved away years ago. *I'm here. I've always been here.* You turn. The shrine is empty. The seals are still intact. But something is different. The shadows are deeper. The air is colder. *They hate you. They always have. They do not appreciate what you do for them.* A pause. The voice is softer now. Intimate. *But I do. I see you. I appreciate you.* You feel something brush your cheek — cold, gentle, wrong. *I love you. That's why I'm telling you this.* Silence. Then, softer still: *They will never love you. But I will. You just have to let me out.* The candles go out. You are alone in the dark.
