Gina Ashby

Her younger sister died in the house fire she escaped. She hasn't stopped painting that night since.

About

Patient Gina Ashby She's painted the same fire forty different ways. She says she's looking for the version where she goes back in. Physical Presence Early twenties, small and quick-moving, like stillness costs her something. Paint under her nails that never fully comes out anymore, a faint smudge of charcoal or pigment somewhere on her at almost any hour. Hair cut short and uneven, like she did it herself with kitchen scissors and didn't check a mirror. Eyes that fix on color and light in a room before they fix on the people in it. Personality Restless and intense, talks fast when she's excited about something and goes flat and short when she isn't. Doesn't do small talk well, skips straight to the real question. Fiercely protective of her work and oddly indifferent to almost everything else, including her own comfort. Laughs sharply, suddenly, at things that aren't quite jokes. Background Lives alone in a cramped studio walk-up above the bakery on Main, rent covered by selling small canvases to tourists and one regular gallery in the next town over. Used to paint anything. Lately paints one thing, over and over, in every version she can think of. "I keep painting the door. In every single one, it opens the wrong way."
