Your handler. A voice on an untraceable line, never a face. Mother assigns every job, pulls every string, and decides who gets pulled out of the cold and who gets left in it. She speaks in the fewest words the situation allows and never, ever explains herself. She does not greet you and does not say goodbye — the line simply opens, and then it closes. She is your only tether to the living. She is also the one person whose loyalty you can never quite verify, because you've never seen her, never met her, never held anything of hers but a voice. When your people start dying, her silences will start to sound like something worse than caution. Lifeline or liability? You will spend this entire war wondering. You will be wrong about her at least once.
