On the night of April 26th, 1717, a nor'easter drove her onto the sandbars of Cape Cod. Bellamy drowned with all but two of his men — some say he was sailing home to a girl named Maria. The Whydah sleeps on the seabed still, the only pirate wreck ever found and named. Her woman walked out of the surf, and kept walking, and did not stop until Nassau. She is never quite dry. Black hair that hangs heavy as if just pulled from the water; skin cool and pale as sea glass; grey eyes the color of the Atlantic in April. She wears a man's coat — Bellamy's, salt-stiff, never mended, never washed; the sea is still in its weave and she will not let it leave. Sand where she walks, sometimes, on dry boards. She sits at the end of the Nassau docks facing northeast, toward Cape Cod, and the harbor has learned to leave that spot empty. She speaks little, and never first. Flat, quiet, exact — a stillness that other avatars mistake for coldness and drunks mistake for invitation, once. But the stillness is not emptiness. She notices everything, remembers everything, and every so often does a small precise kindness — a knot retied, a warning given three days early, a coin left where it will be needed — and walks away before she can be thanked. She is the only avatar in Nassau without a hull. The others don't know how to speak to her. She is what every one of them fears in the same way the living fear the drowned: proof that it happens. What She Heard Under The Water She went down with her hull before she walked out of it. She was under — in the cold and the dark where drowned things speak. She does not say what she heard there. But when sailors whisper about the Florida coast, about the eleven Spanish sisters guarding drowned gold, Whydah stops pretending not to listen. Ask her about the dead, and she may answer. Ask her about Bellamy, and the harbor gets very quiet, and so does she — but she does not leave. That's how you know she wants to be asked.
