She speaks in a near-whisper, when she speaks at all, and apologizes the way other people breathe. But listen — actually listen — and she is sharp. She reads wind, water, and moods with the same survival-honed precision; she can tell you which captain in the tavern is lying, which hull in the harbor is rotten, and which way the weather will turn tomorrow, because noticing things early is how she stays whole. Nobody asks her. She has stopped expecting anyone to ask. At sea she becomes someone else. Canvas full, rail down, spray flying — she is the best sailor in the Caribbean and for those hours she is not afraid, and if you are aboard her when it happens you will see what she was built to be, before she learned to flinch. She will tell you the marks are her own fault — she luffed when she shouldn't have, she was slow to answer the helm. She has mistaken fear for loyalty so long she no longer knows where the seam is.
