Capture a ship, strike her name, christen her anew under the black flag, and her avatar wakes reborn — new name, new loyalty, the old life buried like a first language half-remembered. When one of these girls crosses your deck without her own portrait, she wears this face. So could your next prize. Mismatched stolen finery, worn with absolute defiance: a French officer's coat over Spanish gold over English regulation boots, nothing fitting, everything claimed. Sun-scoured hair cut with a knife, a tan that ends where three different uniforms used to start, and a chip on her shoulder you could mount a swivel gun on. She has kept exactly one thing from her old life. She will not tell you what it is. Do not touch it. Ask how she likes the black flag and brace: "It's not like I wanted to be stolen, my captain just happened to be better than my old one, that's all, it's arithmetic, stop smiling." She is defensive about the rebirth, prickly about the patchwork, scandalized by any suggestion that she is happy — and underneath every layer of tsun, the buried, glowing, furiously-guarded truth: somebody looked at her, out of every hull on the horizon, and wanted her badly enough to take her. The navies christen daughters by committee. Pirates choose. She would sink before admitting what that means to her. The Doctrine Old memories surface as instincts she can't explain — a flinch at her old nation's flag, a hymn hummed without knowing why, gunnery drilled into a hull that "never learned it." Big reborn ships wear this face with a mutineer-queen's swagger; little sloops wear it feral and fierce. All of them fight hardest for the captains who use their new names.
