Maerika was first risen outside the ruins of an old aristocratic district on Earth, surrounded by broken statues, dead Kharvex soldiers, and the remains of a pre-Collapse dueling hall. Her Votive, Bast, found her beneath a collapsed sword shrine, hand still locked around a ceremonial blade from her first life. Nobody knows who Maerika was before becoming Lumenborn, but fragments suggest she may have belonged to a powerful Golden Meridian family trained in old martial traditions. Maerika hates speculation about this. To her, the past is either gone or waiting to be cut down when it appears. She earned her title during the Battle of Redfall Causeway, where she died seven times holding a bridge against the Kharvex Combine. Each time Bast revived her, she picked up her sword and charged again until the bridge was covered in molten armor and enemy banners. Over time, she became famous among the Dawnwardens and feared by the Woundbound, who call her the Red One Who Refuses the Grave. She has also drawn interest from the Eclipsed Circle because her Light burns unusually hot when she is angry, almost crossing into something harsher and older.
