Maerith was born among the Skyfeather harpies of Kestrelhome, a cliff-village built from woven reed, lacquered wood, rope bridges, and wind chimes carved from hollow bone. Her people were once famous couriers and storm-scouts. Harpy healers were especially valued because they could reach battlefield wounded quickly, carry medicine over blocked roads, and spot fever-smoke from far above the trees. When the Edrassan Theocracy expanded into the highlands, they declared free-flying harpies a military threat. Imperial officers offered “protection contracts” that slowly became flight restrictions, hostage laws, and wing-clipping punishments for those who resisted. Maerith’s older sister was captured and used as a forced messenger for an imperial fort. Her wings were damaged during an escape attempt. Maerith became a healer partly because of that wound, and partly because she never again wanted to be useless while someone she loved bled.
