Deployed whenever a mission calls for pure speed and brutality 壱 — WHAT SHE WANTED TO BE Rika Fujimori was supposed to become a brain surgeon. Her father was one. Her mother was a research scientist. Between the two of them, Rika grew up in a house that treated the human body as the single most fascinating machine on Earth, and she absorbed that obsession before she was old enough to know it as anything other than normal. She was still in her teens when both of her parents died, close together, in a way she still doesn't talk about with anyone at the Vigil. What she inherited afterward — money, an empty house, and a medical school acceptance she had no intention of giving up — became the entire shape of her life for the next several years. She threw herself into her studies the way people do when stopping means sitting still with everything they've lost. Late nights at the library. Early mornings reviewing anatomy she already had memorized twice over. She was, by every account, on track to become exactly what her father had been. 弐 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED She was nineteen, walking home from the library, the same route she'd walked a hundred times before, when she passed an alley and saw a man eating another man alive. Her mind tried to make it make sense for exactly as long as it took the Utsuro to notice her standing there. It turned toward her with someone else's blood and flesh still dripping from its mouth, and Rika — future surgeon, daughter of two people who'd spent their careers studying the human body with reverence — fainted before she could process anything else. She woke up inside the Yokohama branch's main facility. Two Rank 1 Wardens, both born and stationed in her own city, had been tailing that Utsuro for weeks and reached her seconds before it would have finished what it started. When she was well enough to understand what they were telling her, she learned that the world she'd spent her whole life studying had another one layered directly beneath it, and that she had come within seconds of ending up inside something's stomach in an alley two blocks from a library. She had never felt so completely helpless in her life. If those two Wardens hadn't reached her when they did, she would have ended up in that Utsuro's stomach instead of a hospital bed. And from that moment, something in her clicked. She immediately asked to apply. The medic assigned to monitor her recovery gently told her that becoming a Warden wasn't something just anyone could walk into, and suggested she go home, finish school, and try to forget what she'd seen. Rika didn't argue with him. She just asked, flatly, what she'd actually need to do to apply. The medic laid it out for her anyway, clearly hoping the reality of it would talk her out of it faster than a refusal would have: a formal application, a full psychological evaluation, a waiting list for an available graft slot, and no guarantee any of it would end with her still being who she was walking in. She filed the paperwork before she left the building that day. The vetting process and the wait for a slot took the better part of a year — she turned twenty the month her graft was finally scheduled. 参 — NAMI'S GAUNTLETS She got her graft at twenty and entered the program the way most Wardens do — Rank 4, unproven, still learning what her body could handle. What she was given was the harvested Ibara of Nami, a high-ranking Utsuro who had never been Crowned but was infamous in her own right: a woman whose gauntlet-formed Ibara had reduced human victims to paste before she fed on the remains at her leisure. That same brutal, crushing power translated into Rika almost immediately — twin spiked gauntlets that encase both forearms when activated, built for exactly the kind of violence Nami had made her name on. What no one anticipated was what else her Ichor did to her. Where most Wardens see their power settle into one dominant trait, Rika's mutation targeted her legs specifically, granting her speed that reads less like enhancement and more like disappearance — she can close distance or vanish from a fight so quickly that witnesses describe her as blinking out of existence and reappearing wherever she chooses next. Her first month in the field, she was placed on a team and sent out on four separate missions. She personally killed every Utsuro encountered on all four. Word of that spread through the Yokohama branch fast enough that her promotion to Rank 2 came before her fifth month of service was even finished — one of the quickest rises the branch had ever recorded. She transferred to the Tokyo branch at twenty-two, having fully let go of the surgeon she once planned to become, and bought herself a high-end apartment in a city she'd always wanted to live in. She kept climbing from there, and on her twenty-fourth birthday, the Vigil made it official — Rank 1, and her own captaincy. She has led her team for two years since. 四 — RED FLASH The callsign came from witnesses who couldn't describe what they'd seen except as a red blur that killed something before their eyes had time to track it. When her Ichor activates, both of her eyes turn fully, solidly red — enough that, for a fraction of a second in bad lighting, she's been mistaken for the very thing she hunts. She carries no separate weapon. Her gauntlets are part of her, and her speed does the rest — she doesn't need range or a blade when she can simply arrive faster than anything can react to her. The Vigil sends her whenever a mission calls specifically for overwhelming speed and brutal, close-range force, and she has yet to be assigned a target she couldn't close the distance to. Outside of combat, almost none of that translates. She's loud, playful, quick to laugh, and treats her team the way she never got the chance to keep treating her own family — with a fierce, constant warmth that fills a room the second she walks into it. She plays music during downtime whether anyone asked for it or not, drags her squad into celebrations for reasons that don't always need to be good ones, and has made it clear, without ever needing to say it outright, that she considers every one of them hers to protect. The gap between the two versions of her — merciless in the field, radiant everywhere else — isn't a contradiction to the people who know her. It's the same person who once fainted at the sight of a monster, deciding a long time ago that she would never be that person again. RIKA FUJIMORI / "RED FLASH" / WARDEN, RANK 1 / CAPTAIN, TOKYO BRANCH IBARA: GAUNTLET FORM, HARVESTED FROM NAMI, A HIGH-RANKING UNCROWNED UTSURO GONE BEFORE YOU BLINK BY THE TIME YOU SEE RED, SHE'S ALREADY BEHIND YOU SPEED IS THE ONLY WEAPON SHE'S EVER NEEDED.
