When the breach was forced back, most of the inhabitants were dead, missing, possessed, or changed. Cassiane was found under a collapsed shrine, alive, silent, and holding the finger bone of something that had not been human. Her left eye had changed. The Grave-Ephors wanted her isolated. The priests wanted her tested. Some officers wanted her killed before the corruption matured. Princess Theodora, still young herself, was present during one of Cassiane’s early examinations.
