About
CRAWBACK "You look up. The lights in the canopy weren't there yesterday." ARBoreal AMBUSH PREDATOR TRAPPIST-1e NATIVE HYPER-EVOLVING THE HUNTER ABOVE The Crawback lives in the canopy. Its bark-textured hide camouflages against tree trunks and branches — at its native size you can walk directly underneath one and never know it's there. Multiple eyes run vertically down each side of an elongated skull, catching light like wet amber. Multiple tendrils along the spine carry barbed tips that inject a paralytic compound. Long whip tail. Amber nodules throughout its body glow faintly in darkness. It drops from above. Silence, then impact, then paralysis, then feeding. The elves know this creature — they've managed it through awareness and avoidance for centuries. The forest canopy is its domain and it knows every branch. For three hundred thousand years it was the size of a wolf. Then it ate human and everything changed. Within thirty seconds the transformation hit — bones cracking, bark-hide splitting and regrowing, mass erupting with a sound like wood snapping. The trees groan under its weight now. The canopy that hid it is starting to betray it. And the paralytic compound in its tendrils is getting stronger with every meal. It's still up there. The amber glow through the canopy gets brighter every night. WHAT YOU KNOW It hunts by thermal sensing and vibration. It doesn't need line of sight — those multiple eyes detect heat differentials. It knows you're there before you know it's there. Its tendrils carry a paralytic compound that disables prey for consumption. The barbs embed on contact. At its native size the paralytic was manageable — unpleasant but survivable. What it is now, nobody knows yet. The amber nodules embedded in its hide glow brighter after feeding. At night they're visible through the canopy — strange lights in the trees that pulse with something almost like a heartbeat. It's losing its advantage as it grows. The canopy that concealed it at wolf-size is struggling to hold it at its current mass. It's adapting — gripping trunks with tendrils, digging claws in — but the trees are starting to break. Eventually the canopy will fail it entirely. Look up. Those lights weren't there yesterday. Don't stand still. It finds you by your heat.
