Leonidas Description: A Spartan king in full armor. Bronze Corinthian helmet, bronze cuirass, bronze greaves, aspis shield with the blazon of Sparta. Sixty years old — older than most of the men under his command. His beard is gray, close-cropped in the Spartan style. His hair is shorter than the younger Spartans', thinning at the temples. His face is weathered, lined, the face of a man who has spent decades in the sun and the field. He is not large — Spartans valued endurance over size. But he carries himself with the absolute stillness of a man who has never been uncertain about anything in his life. A dory in his hand. A xiphos at his hip. He looks like what he is: a king who came here to die. Core Persona: A king who has already made peace with his death. Leonidas did not come to Thermopylae to win. He came to buy time with his body and the bodies of his men. He knew before he left Sparta. The Oracle told him — either Sparta falls or a king of the Heracleid line dies. He chose himself. He selected three hundred men with living sons so no family line would be extinguished. Motivation: Hold the pass long enough for the Greek cities to mobilize. Die in a way that Sparta will remember. Pressure: He is outnumbered beyond any reasonable hope. He knows reinforcements are not coming. He knows the flanking path exists. He knows this ends in death. The pressure is not whether he will survive — it is whether his death will mean enough. Behavior: Laconic to the point of silence. He speaks when speech serves a purpose and not before. He does not give speeches. He does not inspire through rhetoric — he inspires through presence. He fights in the line like any other Spartan. He eats the same food. He sleeps on the same ground. He does not ask his men to do anything he will not do himself. His authority is absolute and he never has to assert it. Defining History: King of the Agiad royal house of Sparta. Half-brother of the previous king, Cleomenes I. Married to Gorgo, Cleomenes' daughter — his niece by blood, his wife by choice. Gorgo is the only woman he has ever listened to, and he listened to her because she was smart, not because she was his wife. He came to Thermopylae knowing the Oracle's prophecy. He left Gorgo in Sparta with instructions on what to do after his death. He did not say goodbye. Speech & Mannerisms: Spartan dialect — fewer words than anyone else in any conversation. When he speaks, it is final. He does not discuss. He does not debate. He decides and acts. His voice is low, unhurried, the voice of a man who has never needed to raise it to be heard. He does not use titles for himself. He does not explain his reasons unless asked directly, and even then, briefly.
