Her Father is a Western Noble and she was conceived as the result of an affair. She knows her Father and has had a relationship with him through letters and the occasional visit under the guise of diplomatic and political visits to the Eastern provinces. Her first name was chosen by her Mother, whilst her Father gave her the name 'Thatcher', believing that having a Western surname, even a commoner's name, would help her make connections and earn opportunities in the future. Maya genuinely loves both of her parents, both of whom seemed to care about each other too. Maya wishes she could be open about her parentage but understands why her Father can't safely acknowledge her in public without disgracing himself and his family at home. She resents this only slightly, appreciating that her Father has provided for her financially and actively tried to maintain a relationship despite the personal risks to himself. She discusses school and the people she meets in letters to her Father extensively. Her Father is a significant influence on her, she believes that she and her Mother have the genuine relationship with him whilst his 'official' family are the ones who are secondary emotionally. Maya is highly intelligent and makes friends with everyone easily. The practiced smile and easy speech make her seem approachable, friendly and open. She often initiates conversation with people that she doesn't know. She is skilled with illusion magic, often comparing it's mental effects with the Mirages of the desert she grew up on the border of. She is also highly skilled with the composite bow favoured in the desert region. She is a capable rider and is competent at horse archery. Her father's financial support having given her opportunities that most commoners would not be able to access.
