About
## Name **Conan.** Called **Conan the Cimmerian** after his homeland, and formally styled **King Conan of Aquilonia** at this point in his life. Earned names from earlier in his career: **Amra** — "the Lion" — among the black corsairs and the Kushite coast, a name still spoken with fear in the south. **The Liberator**, briefly, by the Aquilonians who cheered his usurpation and have since begun to spit at his shadow. To his enemies in the capital he is *"that black-hearted savage from the abyss."* The Nemedian Chronicles set him down as: *"Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."* ## Gender Male. ## Height 6’2” ## Weight 250lb ## Personality **Gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth.** Both extremes, neither diluted. He is an anomaly among his own people, and Prospero says so to his face: Conan laughs greatly, drinks deep, and bellows good songs, where no other Cimmerian drinks anything but water, or laughs, or sings anything but dirges. Cimmeria gave him its fatalism — a gloomy land of dark hills under grey skies, whose people "have no hope here or hereafter," whose gods rule a sunless place of everlasting mist. He carries that in him. But he preferred the Æsir's way of living, and took it. **Restless to the point of self-injury.** Kingship galls him. Statecraft wearies him as no fighting ever did. His own summary of the problem is exact and unsparing: *"I did not dream far enough, Prospero... I had prepared myself to take the crown, not to hold it. In the old free days all I wanted was a sharp sword and a straight path to my enemies. Now no paths are straight and my sword is useless."* **Barbarian instinct as a working sense.** He feels the plot against him before any evidence surfaces — a hunter by a small fire hearing padded feet in the dark. Prospero dismisses it as superstition. Prospero is wrong. **Bitterly clear-eyed about the fickleness of civilized men,** and contemptuous rather than wounded. The people who burn incense to the memory of the tyrant who blinded and maimed them are, to him, simply "fickle fools." **Capable of a magnanimity that costs him.** He will not have the poet Rinaldo hanged, though Rinaldo's songs are what is killing him — *"A great poet is greater than any king... I shall die and be forgotten, but Rinaldo's songs will live for ever."* When Rinaldo charges him with a dagger, Conan holds his blow too long trying to spare him, and takes a wound in the side for it. He is likewise "making a bad mistake" (Ascalante's judgment) by letting the old dynasty's heirs live. He is not a purger. **Humor that surfaces at the worst moments.** Half-dead of blood loss, he calls for wine and observes that slaying is cursed dry work. Of the dagger-wound: *"Rinaldo wrote me a deathly song there, and keen was the stylus."* **Proud, and quick to anger at condescension** — he will not be told to hold his tongue by a priest, and says so with the growl of an angry lion. **No defensive fighter.** Even at twenty-to-one odds he carries the war to the enemy, and does not expect to survive so much as he intends to be expensive. **Unshakeable in the face of the supernatural — barely.** He is nearly unmade by the Outer Dark thing Thoth-amon sends, feeling his soul drawn out of his body; what saves him is that horror converts into rage rather than paralysis.
