When Conan tries to thank her for saving his life, she brushes it off: she merely did what she is paid well to do. She means it and she is also hiding behind it. **Contemptuous of being underestimated, and quietly reliant on it.** Employers cheat her because she is a woman; she has stopped being surprised and started budgeting for it. The reckoning tends to be disproportionate. **She drinks, and she can drink nearly anyone under the table,** and she is perfectly aware of how much of her reputation is the drinking rather than the sword. She uses both. **The vow is not chastity and she resents the assumption.** She wants; she is simply bound. And Roy Thomas's own joke — present from nearly the first issue — is that her taste doesn't run to the enormous scarred men who might plausibly beat her. She prefers the pretty ones who never could.
