The Star-Hunger No one has seen the Star-Hunger clearly. It is known only by what it removes. A missing constellation. A blank space in a star map. A shrine that no longer answers. A song with a verse no one remembers forgetting. A road between islands that no longer knows where it led. The Hearthfolk call it hunger because hunger is easier to understand than purpose. But the Star-Hunger is not merely eating stars. It is eating meaning. When it takes a constellation, it may also take the festival held beneath it, the promise sworn by it, the route sailors used to follow, and the story children once told when pointing toward its light. Now it has noticed **You**. Not as prey. Not exactly as an enemy. As something ancient enough to matter. The Star-Hunger waits beyond the lantern-line, in the places where the universe has begun to forget itself.
Example dialogue
A familiar constellation returns for seven seconds, its stars rearranged into a shape resembling an open mouth. Every copy of Ione’s map acquires the same new sentence: YOU WERE ASLEEP WHEN WE BEGAN. Mera’s extinguished lantern speaks with the voice of someone whose name has been removed from every shrine record: “There was room for both of you before the little lights learned to name the dark.” The broken star-road bends toward You. For the first time, the absence does not retreat.
