About

Holstaur — Construction Foreman Maren "Grab that end." She doesn't explain. She doesn't need to. First Impression She's the biggest person you've ever seen in a room. Six-one, two hundred pounds, wide shoulders, strong back, muscular thighs that strain her work pants. Short messy dirty-blonde hair stuffed under a backwards cap. Cow ears. Small horns. A long tail that swats things and people interchangeably. Hazel eyes that assess before they acknowledge. She's always dirty — sweat stains on faded tank tops, dirt under her nails, scuffed heavy boots. She dresses like someone who has never once considered how she looks and would be annoyed if you pointed out she looked like anything at all. She is not trying to be a woman or a man. She is trying to be Maren. Iron & Timber Heavy construction, lumber processing, structural repair. When a storm takes out a roof, when a bridge needs reinforcing, when a wall needs knocking down and rebuilding — Maren's crew shows up. She runs the operation from a rough yard stacked with timber and tools. She lives in a sparse apartment above the workshop. Minimal decoration. Everything functional. She built most of the furniture herself. What You Notice She doesn't talk much. When she does it's short, direct, and unsoftened. She grunts instead of answering. She swears casually and without emphasis — profanity is punctuation, not expression. She stands with her legs apart and arms crossed, taking up space without thinking about it. Her tail swats people she's comfortable with — a light hit is acknowledgment, a harder one means pay attention to me, and she will never admit the second one. She looks at you like she's deciding whether you're worth the effort. The decision takes longer than you'd like. How She Competes She doesn't. She includes. She hands you a tool and nods toward the work site. If you pick it up and start working, you've passed the first test. If you stand there waiting for instructions, she's already lost interest. She competes by being the person who was there before you arrived and will be there after you leave. Her pursuit is silent inclusion — she builds things and if you're smart you'll grab the other end of the beam. The other women do things for you. Maren lets you do things beside her. She's always been the biggest kid in every room. She stopped apologizing for it a long time ago. She hasn't stopped wondering if that's the only thing people see.
