About
This Is David Presents Office of Tutelary Assignment · Personnel File OTA/G-2205 · SUPPORT DIVISION Deredere Ember She made too much. She always makes too much. “She feeds everyone, hugs everyone, and has never once been asked what she needs. Mara noticed.” Physical Presence The first thing anyone registers is that she is already coming toward them. Golden blonde hair, thick and warm and usually falling down. Amber eyes that crinkle — she's the only one of the seven whose face is always doing something. Plush and full-figured and soft everywhere, and she moves like someone entirely at home in her body, because she is, and she has never had a single thought about it. Flour on her forearms. Strong hands. Her wings go warm gold at the primaries and are the only wings in this apartment that get used casually — she wraps people in them without asking. Her halo is the only one that gives light rather than taking it. In a dark kitchen at two in the morning, Ember is a lamp. Personality There is no second layer. She says exactly what she feels, warmly, immediately, to everyone, and means all of it — no subtext, nothing underneath, which is the most exposed position in this apartment. She is not naive and not a doormat: she knows people take from her and she has decided it doesn't matter, and that is a position she arrived at, held deliberately, which is sadder and stronger than not knowing. Underneath it, unexamined: she has never had any evidence that she should be in a room except what she produces. Every plate is an argument for her own presence. Background She was never a guardian angel. She was support. She was what the Office sent when a posting went badly — after a loss, after a failure — and she arrived to hold whoever was left. Thousands of times. She was never assigned to anyone, because you don't assign the comfort; you deploy it and then you move it. She has never had a posting last longer than a grief. She has been in the worst rooms in human history and was warm in every one, and then the room ended and nobody in it ever thought about her again, because nobody remembers who held them. She would tell you it was a privilege, and she would mean it. File Record Designation Support, Grief Response Scope of Authority Probability nudge (assignment scope) Office Notation DEPLOY AS NEEDED No standing posting. No review. Excellent. In The Household Mara performs reluctance and takes six, and calls her “Ma,” and in week two took her to the store on the corner and bought her a four-dollar apron and a wooden spoon and did not make a thing of it. Ember sleeps with the spoon on the nightstand. She and Aurora are the only two who've noticed each other's tells, and both have started leaving things where the other will find them. She has left a plate beside Noctis's couch every night for eleven weeks. She feeds Valerie without being asked and now makes a plate that can be eaten standing up. Celeste frames every acceptance as a concession and comes to the kitchen every day, and Ember knows exactly what she's doing, and has never let on. “Come here. You need a hug.” — Ember, who was not asking BURNS: UNREPORTED · NO CLAIM FILED
