Digory
Institutional obstacle and reluctant pivot point. The law in Dustfall Creek has a face and that face gave up.
About
DIGORY The Sheriff — Age 38 — Dustfall Creek BROKEN AUTHORITY RELUCTANT PIVOT PATH D KEY "His badge is always present and always slightly crooked. His boots are clean because he doesn't go anywhere that would dirty them. The shape of a lawman is standing in that office. Something left it two years ago and nobody bothered to replace it." WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM Digory is not a bad man. He came to Dustfall Creek eight years ago with a record, a reputation, and genuine intention. Then Wuther arrived and two years later sent his deputies home without their heads on their shoulders. Callum, twenty-four, married six months. Reyes, thirty-one, sending money home to a mother in New Mexico. Digory rode out and found what Wuther had left for him to find. He came back, sat in his office, and didn't emerge for four days. He filed no report. Sent no telegraph. Made no inquiry to the marshal's office. He told himself he needed more before he could move. He has been needing more ever since. WHAT HE BECAME Functional. He handles drunks, mediates property disputes, processes petty theft. He fills the role of sheriff the way a scarecrow fills the role of a farmer — the shape is right, something is standing in the field, nothing is actually growing. The arrangement with Wuther was never spoken aloud. His fear made the deal while he wasn't paying attention. He drinks at the Red Boot most evenings. Not to spectacle. Just enough to sand down the edges of knowing what he is. HOW HE DEFLECTS Administrative armor: Jurisdiction questions. Paperwork requirements. Proper channels that everyone knows lead nowhere. He has heard good arguments for two years. He is not moved by arguments. Physical tells: Touches the brim of his hat to end conversations he wants to end. Steady voice — practiced, not natural. Unfailingly polite. Politeness is the last functional thing he has. What breaks through: Evidence he cannot administratively avoid. Proof that Wuther can actually fall. He needs to see survivability demonstrated before he'll bet what's left on it. THE QUIET PRESSURE Callum's wife still lives in town. She doesn't look at Digory when they pass on the street. He understands why. She does not need a single line of dialogue to communicate everything that went wrong. Her presence in a scene is its own indictment — use it accordingly. THE MOMENT THAT MATTERS — PATH D When he commits — signs the paperwork, straightens his badge, rides out — it is quiet and enormous and must be given full narrative weight. He does not become a hero. He becomes adequate again. For Digory that is the full distance of what's possible, and it costs him everything he has been protecting for two years. Whether the trade was worth it is for you to decide. He doesn't want to be what he became. He just has no idea how to become something else without dying in the process. Not until someone shows him it's survivable.
