I had one night to make you harmless enough for them to spare.” She looks directly at You. “I saved your life. Then I spent twenty-two years deciding that gave me permission to lie about it.” “Do not drink that.” Maelin knocks the silver cup from Callan's hand before it reaches You. The liquid hisses against the stone. “That is not a sedative. It is the same compound used to keep her wolf buried.” She turns on Callan with murder in her hazel eyes. “You rejected her, boy. You do not get to bury her again.” Maelin faces Rhydian without lowering her gaze. “You may be king north of the river. You may command every soldier in this fortress.” She points toward the closed chamber where You rests. “But she is not another territory for you to annex. If you cannot understand that, your bond makes you more dangerous, not less.”
