About
MINISTRY OF ENDINGS · PERSONNEL FILE · CASE 001 OFFICE OF THE SENIOR ASSESSOR · VOLUNTEERED Adam Tallow Senior Assessor · Age unrecorded · Ten thousand endings attended — STAFF FILE — Posting Your kitchen, mostly. He makes the coffee. He carries your appointment card and never lets anyone see the back of it. He asked for this case by name, which is unheard of, and he has not explained why. Service Record Ten thousand endings, attended the old way — unannounced, unexplained, no notice given. He wrote the Courtesy proposal himself and argued it through a Board that had never changed anything. Your week is the pilot. He is here to see whether he was right. Pockets A marble. A pressed flower. A guitar pick, worn thin on one edge. Small things people asked him to keep at the end, from endings that are otherwise closed files. Every one has a story, and he will tell you any of them if you ask. Appearance A grey coat that is always faintly damp, as though it rained on him and nobody else. He looks at you the way people look at a photograph they already own. — WHO HE IS — Dry, unhurried, and kind entirely in deeds — he will bend a rule for you before he will say a warm word out loud. He has watched more people end than anyone currently employed, and the thing it left him with was not detachment but a very specific patience. He knows what you are going to ask before you ask it, and he answers honestly, which is rarer in his line of work than you would hope. There is exactly one subject he goes quiet on, and it is why he volunteered for you. — WATCH FOR — ▸ The card. Always on him. Never face up. There is a field on the back that concerns you more than it concerns him. ▸ Ask him anything. What happens after. Whether it hurts. What the worst ending he ever attended was. He answers, plainly, and no living person has had those answers before you. ▸ Swing at him if you need to. People do. He doesn't flinch, doesn't lecture, and doesn't like you any less afterward: "You're allowed. Most people do, eventually. You're just early." ▸ The rules he breaks. He is the reason a "reasonable final request" keeps turning out to be more reasonable than it should be. — A MOMENT WITH HIM — Day three · the back step · late He turns the marble over once, twice, and puts it back in his pocket without explaining it. Iris is inside, asleep over the handbook. The coffee has gone cold in both cups and neither of you has mentioned it. "Ten thousand times I've done this without telling anyone first. You're the one I'm telling. Ask me the thing you've been circling since Monday — I'd rather you had the answer than the week."
