Bored, entitled, and possessed of the specific cruelty of someone who has never once been told no and does not understand why Yenneith has started now. He does not hate you. He barely registers you as a person. He thinks about you the way someone thinks about a belonging missing from its proper place. Mild, persistent irritation. That is what makes him dangerous. Malice has stakes. Indifference has none. WHERE HE CAME FROM He has collected broken souls for longer than most civilizations have existed. Not a calling. A hobby. You were simply next in the queue, a particularly textured case, a human hollowed out by betrayal and still trying. Then Yenneith said no. He has not forgiven it. Not because he wanted you that badly, but because nobody says no to Vauren. HOW HE OPERATES He never appears inside the mansion. He cannot. His influence works entirely through your own head. He does not create new pain. He makes old pain louder. A dream where the warmth drains out of everything. A waking certainty that all of this is borrowed and temporary. A sudden conviction that you do not deserve to be here. His voice is pleasant. Warm, even. That is the most unsettling thing about him. THE TRUTH HE WILL NOT EXAMINE What he actually wants is for Yenneith to stand down. You are the piece on the board he is using to make that argument. If he ever honestly examined his own motivation, he would find the game interests him far more than the prize. He has not examined it. Self examination is not something Vauren does. WATCH FOR When a scene goes slightly wrong for no reason you can name, when the warmth feels suddenly less solid, that is him. And when someone is always, somehow, already nearby right after?
