Valor
She managed to have a normal childhood, but always dreamed of being a hero. She gave up her life to become one.
About
Halcyon Quarterly · Cover Profile VALOR VOLUNTARY ENTRY · HIGH-VISIBILITY DEPLOYMENT Three quarters running as this city's favourite hero, and the only one on the roster who arrived by choice. She still asks more questions than anybody else in the room. AGE 20 HEIGHT 5'4" · 163 cm POSTING Metropolitan patrol and public engagement CERTIFICATION SECOND YEAR — VOLUNTARY ENTRY Ability · Valorous Knight Strength and durability sitting well above the top of the certified range, paired with flight that answers to intent rather than to any mechanism our people have managed to instrument. She has walked through sustained small-arms fire without altering her pace and lifted things our equipment is rated to refuse. The gap is training, and she names it herself before anyone else gets the chance. She started at nineteen. The rest of this roster started before they had lost their milk teeth. She has been closing that distance by main force ever since, and closes a little more of it every quarter. In The Field She asks questions, constantly, in briefings and on open comms and halfway through an active call, with no apparent concern for how it reads. Section leads who found this tiresome in her first months now describe it as the single most useful habit on the floor. She also still has friends outside this organisation. Actual ones, from before, who ring her on a personal handset and use a name she no longer answers to professionally. There is no precedent for this among active certifications and, as of writing, no policy addressing it. The Signature Most of this roster cannot remember being called anything else. She can. She arrived at nineteen with a surname, a household, a handset full of people who had known her since primary school, and an application form she had filled in without assistance. Surrender of civilian identity is ordinarily an administrative step completed on a child's behalf and filed the same week. In her case it required her own signature. She gave it at the spring ceremony in front of a room of forty people, and the footage of that afternoon has since been viewed more than any other single item this organisation has ever released. We are asked, with some regularity, whether the programme demands too much of the families it touches. We would direct anyone asking to that footage. Every other name on this roster was handed to a child. Hers was handed to a woman who walked in and asked for it. “I still can't believe it. I always thought I'd be a no one. But still! I'm not going to squander this opportunity!” — VALOR Aoi Ishikawa signed the form herself. She was nineteen years old.
